Economic Impact

All California Community Colleges share an explicit economic and workforce development mission, which is to impact the state’s economic growth and competitiveness through industry-specific education and training that helps create a highly skilled workforce.

College of the Canyons fulfills that mission in two ways:

  1. By graduating students with the academic education and skills that meet the workforce needs of business.
  2. In addition to academic degrees, the college helps meet businesses’ needs by providing intensive, short-term customized training for their workforce. This training helps increase productivity and close the skills gap within the organization. In this way, College of the Canyons plays a key role in not only helping companies develop a skilled workforce, but also help keep employees’ skills current with the latest industry, technical, and business practices.
“A big part of our success is that we are connected to the community and are committed to seeing the Santa Clarita Valley prosper from an educational and economic development perspective. We train hundreds of workers each year across many different industries. We train them in areas including advanced technology, manufacturing skills, leadership development, project management, and supplychain management. As we help them build their skills, they become valued, engaged, and productive employees. In turn, they become more committed to their organization and develop increasingly stronger ties to their community. This is the essence of what we call economic development.”

John Milburn, Interim Vice President, Workforce and Economic Advancement, College of the Canyons
